What a terrible day in college football. First, Tulane safety Devon Walker suffered a horrific injury on a helmet-to-helmet hit, and was diagnosed with a cervical spine fracture. Hours later, Arkansas cornerback Tevin Mitchel suffered a serious injury and had to be carted off on an eerily similar play.
Mitchel was going for a tackle at the same time as his Arkansas teammate Alonzo Highsmith, and the two had a violent head-on collision. Mitchel was attended to on the field as the stadium fell silent, and was taken away in an ambulance. Matt Jones of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette tweeted that Mitchel was responsive as he was being carted off.
The initial postgame reports are good as well, as the Democrat-Gazette's Richard Davenport tweeted that Arkansas coach John L. Smith said Mitchell was "moving and appears to be OK."
