Talk about a reality check. The thoughts of the baseball world are with Michael Weiner after it was announced on Tuesday that the MLB Players Association leader is receiving treatment for a brain tumor.
From the MLBPA statement:
Michael's treatments are expected to last about one month, and it is anticipated that he will continue to work out of the Union's New York office on a daily basis during this time.
Michael would like to thank in advance all those who join the Union staff and player membership in wishing him well as he undergoes his treatment, and he looks forward to making a full recovery.
The MLBPA will only announce medical updates when circumstances warrant them.
The 50-year-old took over from Don Fehr in December 2009 and had served as the union's general counsel since 2004. He helped broker the new collective bargaining agreement that guaranteed two straight decades of baseball without a labor stoppage.
Despite holding a position that could be seen as adversarial and haughty, Weiner is one of the most well-liked people in the game. He's as smart and accessible as they come and all it takes is a quick scan of Twitter to see that a lot of people are truly pulling for him in this fight. Everyone at the Stew wishes him the best.
