NASHVILLE, Tenn. — With good reason, I thought this guy was Mr. Met, the New York Mets' longtime ball-headed mascot. But no, (s)he is Homer, the mascot for the Miracle League of North Alabama, an organization that builds playgrounds enabling kids and young adults with special needs to play baseball. Now, how cool is that?
North Alabama isn't far from the winter meetings at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel, and with most of Major and Minor League Baseball attending, it makes sense for organizations such as the Miracle League to stay visible.
But back to the impromptu mascot meeting.
After stepping out of the media room to look for trades that haven't been happening, I came across a figure who looked a lot like Mr. Met. Granted, Mr. Met's head is a lot bigger as everyone knows, but it was dark in the hallway and I had my hopes up and I had to fumble to shoot some video quickly ... and the Mets!
After watching the video a couple of times, I realized my identification mistake. It was not Mr. Met, or even Mr. Redlegs, or any other of the major-league mascots with baseball seams on their head. And the Mets hadn't purchased the Ft. Myers Miracle, which actually went through my head but was dumb to consider.
Still, it was nice to fist-bump Homer. Sorry that I called you "Mr. Met." It could happen to anyone.
